For those who may have known me for a while on this server, you may know this information already... Mulan is my favorite Disney film and I believe she is truly underappreciated! Mulan deals with many themes which are relevant in the society that we live in today and is also one of the most action-packed Disney films out there. I think she deserves more recognition due to these facts and that's what I am going to be writing about today.
Mulan is based on an ancient Chinese legend and I am obsessed! It has many great characters including Mushu, Crickee, Li Shang and of course Ling, Yao and Chien Po. These characters have hilarious lines throughout the film and make the movie comedic to an extent. Of course, it wouldn't be a Disney film without some great songs which get stuck in your head! "I'll make a man out of you" and "Reflection" are the two most popular tracks from this Disney title and I can see why! These songs are fantastic and both have great meanings behind them!
Now for the serious part of this blog... What does Mulan showcase for society and the children and young people who are watching? It shows that you don't need to be anyone else and to be true to yourself. She may have hidden her identity throughout the film but in the final battle, she didn't care what people thought of her! She showed her true self and in recent times, I believe this is an important lesson which should be carried through all of our lives. No matter what you identify as and no matter what type of person you are, we all need to show our true colors. I also think this film shows the importance of equality. As you can see in the film, gender is a major issue which is eventually looked at towards the end as the Emporer accepts what she has done for China and that women should always try to achieve whatever they want to. Gender roles should no longer exist! I also think this is a great movie for the likes of Pride Month as it takes away those stereotypes which don't benefit us!!!
What I'm really trying to say is... Mulan has many lessons and maybe if she was more appreciated in the Disney world, these real-life issues could be prevented as the ideas aren't put into children or young peoples heads!
Fa Mulan is an icon! I cannot wait to see how they develop the live action even though I am secretly dreading it due to the characters being taken out and the music missing! I guess I will just need to sing for the theatre... Nah would not torture them like that.
I totally recommend this movie! If you haven't seen it you should!
I am sorry for how long this blog went on for... my exam was around the topic of stereotypes today!
Thanks to anyone who reads!
