Day Twelve!

Come here everyday for a new spooky Disney fact as we count down to Halloween!!

Welcome back, Palace mortals, to Disney Halloween facts. I am your ghost host, sofieremix, returning again with some fun facts about the original Haunted Mansion movie. Early drafts of the Haunted Mansion film script were set in upstate New York, with a manor house inspired by the Walt Disney World attraction. Director Rob Minkoff and production John Myhre felt the movie should feature a mansion inspired by the Disneyland original, and moved the otherworldly action to New Orleans. Following the massive success of Ghostbusters (1984), Disney green-lit the film in the mid 1980s. At first, they would only give permission for the film to be made if Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, or Rick Moranis would play the lead role. The Gracey family that haunts the Haunted Mansion is named for Yale Gracey, one of the original Imagineers (Disney designers) of the Disneyland ride, which opened in 1969. Although a ghostly Gracey is never officially named in the ride narration or press, the name has long been associated with the disembodied "Ghost Host" in the attraction through fans' speculated narratives (contrary to popular belief, the ride does not have a definite story). There are many other imagineers hidden throughout the movie as Madame Leota, the singing busts, and many other beloved characters.
