Coordinator Popular Post lunaology 3387 Posted December 8, 2020 Coordinator Popular Post Share Posted December 8, 2020 Hello everyone! I'm Sofie, more commonly known as Sofieology and welcome to our eleventh round of Palace Staff Interviews! Just a heads up, I will be closing this interview on Thursday, so make sure you get your votes in beforehand! Today, I am interviewing the brilliantly talented @Cubits! Cubits is a developer on Palace and one of our incredible technicians. He helps out with everything from rides, to events, even the forums! He is absolutely hilarious and a wonderful person to work with on the team. Innit? Welcome Cubits! [Sofieology]: How are you doing, Cubits? [Cubits]: Hi, my name is Cubits. I currently work in the Development Department here at Palace but spent time with GR as a guide and the Tech Department as a technician (which I still help with regularly)! One of my favourite rides on Palace would probably be Tower of Terror, but also Bob's Bugs Begone, which I made out of impulse for Mickeys Not So Spooky Halloween Party. Often when I'm not working on a project, I go ride some rides. [Sofieology]: You are a Developer on Palace! Care to tell us what it’s like? What are some things you are involved in on Palace? [Cubits]: Being a Developer is pretty cool. To Quote @TheCraftyBatman, 'Magicians behind the scenes for sure. I'll let them speak for themselves if they want to clarify/add more, but chances are if it's not vanilla Minecraft, the devs touched it at some point. Don't make them angry.' To add onto that, we do a lot of the stuff guests would never typically see or think of. Shows? We wrote the code for those to work. Magicbands? We did that. Queues? Also us! We also work on a variety of projects that people likely never see, such as tools and websites for the Staff to use and also to help run the servers day to day. I could go on for days about what we do, but I'm sure Pal16 will have time for more questions! [Sofieology]: You work on a wide variety of projects! What has been the hardest thing you have worked on? What are you looking forward to seeing completed in the future? [Cubits]: Quite a few of the things I've worked on have been challenging to say the least. A good example for the Development Team was the Seasonal Advent Plugin, which forced me to learn a lot more about how we run our servers, and making it efficient. In terms of Tech, helping with Move It Shake It was challenging, it's something we haven't really done before, combining models with Armorstands and a parade, as well as corners! Also fixing Mainstreet Electrical Parade, which seemed simple on the surface, but wasn't once I dived in. I must say the progress we're making to moving from 1.12 is one of the biggest things I'm looking forward to, mainly because it opens up so many more opportunities for creating interesting rides and connecting all the parks! [Sofieology]: Let’s get to know Cubits outside of Palace! Tell us a bit about yourself? [Cubits]: Well, I live in England currently, it's cold mostly and rainy. I work for a company called Sky (child of Comcast) as a Software Engineer, which means I can use a lot of experience in coding between Palace and also apply things I've learnt here at work. I drive the most unreliable Mini, which feels like it breaks every few months (It doesn't but my bank account begs to differ). I also like theme parks, a lot. Alton Towers is cool, anyone who comes to the UK should come with me, lots of fun. Also VR, I love Beat Saber and various other VR games (Palace in VR is cool by the way). [Sofieology]: Now, we actually have a couple of fan questions for you, so I’m gonna ask you them in a bit of a lightning round: Who taught you all the tech and developing you know? [Cubits]: Not @Becks322. But for the sake of letting her think she did, her I suppose lol [Sofieology]: What was the first thing @Lateamy said to you when she met you? [Cubits]: ”Did you know I used to be staff on McMagic?” [Sofieology]: Who’s your bestest friend? [Cubits]: I hang with lots of cool people, a lot to list out, and I don't want to upset anyone by saying who my bestest is, sorry! [Sofieology]: Can I please see Laugh Floor? [Cubits]: No @Lateamy [Sofieology]: Any secret projects? [Cubits]: Yes! A few I can't talk about, but some big ones. 2021 is looking good! [Sofieology]: Do you have a bedtime story? If so, what stories? [Cubits]: Uhh, Once Upon a Time, there was a Developer Called Cubits, and his parade destroyed WDW1. The end. [Sofieology]: What does a developer do that’s different to a technician? [Cubits]: Technicians do a lot of command blocks and in game stuff, as well as using our 'Show Plugin'. Whereas a Developer will write code to achieve an end goal. For example, in Minecraft Terms, the Advent Calendar would take hundreds of command blocks, but in Java I wrote 281 lines of short lined code which makes it extremely quick and easy to build something awesome. Also websites. I like websites. [Sofieology]: What advice do you have for someone who wants to join the team? [Cubits]: Depending on the area depends on my advice. For Tech, a show reel to back up what you're saying is essential and can also be a lot of fun to make. I made a preshow from a UK attraction using in game stuff and Armor stands. For Development, if you truly know what you're doing, speaking to @Legobuilder0813 is your best bet. Once again, prior work and examples is Ideal, having a github account to back it up as well really helps [Sofieology]: Important Question: Kerchoo? [Cubits]: Kachow, but also Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout is my favourite DCA ride. [Sofieology]: You and I often play a hunger games simulator together! Who do you think would win a Palace Staff version of the game and why? [Cubits]: Ooh! Tough one. Going off my track record, I'd die first, not even surviving a day. I think @Beau would have a high chance, he tends to be my teammate and also the reason I die in those simulators. [Sofieology]: For those who need context, almost every single time we play, Cubits dies within the first day, so if he lives we normally state for his updates, “Cubits is still somehow alive”. Since you are a dev, I have to ask: if you could create anything you wanted on Palace, what would you make and why? [Cubits]: Ride Photos! How cool would that be! Imagine seeing your little player on a photo after riding on a wall and having them sent to your forums profile straight away! I think that'd be pretty cool, and definitely something I'd want as a guest. [Sofieology]: You have been a part of Palace for quite some time! What are some of your favorite memories here? [Cubits]: I think one of my favourite memories is showing the Sponsors of Laugh Floor the completed Spook Floor Halloween show. Directing Move it Shake it was awesome as well and something I really enjoyed. Oh, also meeting @Lateamy with @Becks322 outside of Fantasmic was pretty cool. [Sofieology]: Is there anything else you’d like to add? [Cubits]: Palace is super cool, everyone here is super cool, and you all help to shape this community into being this awesome. Ciao Ciao! [Sofieology]: Well, thank you again for talking with me today, Cubits! I hope you enjoy the holidays! Sofie here again!
